Lesson 8 (1/28/15)

Practice for this week:

  1. Lesson book page 14-15 (the quarter note and "The Old Clock")
  2. Keep working on "I am a Child of God". Remember to really focus on the fingering!! If you learn the right fingering it will make it easier to play the song, and you'll be able to play it faster and have more fun with it!
  3. Try to figure our the name that tune from last week. Hint: It's a primary song! Try to play the notes and rhythm as they are written. You can help each other figure it out, too.
  4. Practice the left hand and then make up the melody for your song. Remember to use only black notes. Choose about 10 notes and use any rhythm you want.

Lesson 7 (1/21/15)

Practice Up and Down the Escalator with different rhythm values:

1) All whole notes (count to 4 with each note)
2) All half notes (count to 2 with each  note)
3) All quarter notes (count to 1 with each note)
4) Mix it up! Write out the notes you're going to play and then try to follow your notes. This could be done as a quiz to give to your sister, too!

Lesson book: page 12-13
Technique book: page 4-6
Theory book: Do 1 page per day (2-7)

Keep practicing "I am a child of god." Remember to focus on using the fingers on the sheets I made for you. Keep practicing the left hand chords, too. We'll work on them over the next few weeks.

Here are all the notes to "up on the housetop" for you to review. Make sure to add the right rhythm!
Try this one too! See if you can name the tune!

Lesson 6 (1/7/15)

This week we're focusing on learning the Left Hand for "I am a Child of God".
Here is the practice sheet.

Practice Tips:

  1. Remember that the notes in the Left Hand Chords should be played at the same time.
  2. Practice the left hand by itself until you are comfortable moving from chord to chord.
  3. When you are ready (maybe by the last day or two of the week), try putting the left hand and right hand together.
  4. If it's really difficult, just wait until next week and I'll help you put the hands together. The more you practice each hand separately, the easier it will be to put them together.
GENERAL PRACTICE TIP: Sometimes a song will seem really hard! But don't worry, this is normal. Just practice a little and then take a break. Often when you come back the next day it is automatically a little easier! Every day the same thing will happen! So don't give up! You can do it!

Other things to remember:
  • Check your hand position and shape.
  • Watch which fingers you are using.
  • Have fun!

Don't forget to practice your songs in your lesson book as well!
